The Story of Some Like It Hot

The show has its origination in the early 1930s just before the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, see a mobster commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they’re playing. Rather than allow the mobster to make them a target, the musicians decide to go on the run.

They put on women’s clothing and join a touring all-women swing big band called Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopators. While touring, the two become infatuated with the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They must keep their real identities hidden, but they both hope to gain the favor of Sugar Kane.

As the group tours, relationships form that threaten to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The mob and the FBI get involved, spotting Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines, further complicating the groups traveling to performances and its ability to find new investors.

Jerry, now identifying as Daphne, falls in love with one of the investors, leading to a planned wedding. Eventually, true identities becomes known, but that doesn't alter their feelings for each other. As Prohibition comes to an end, everyone is able to move on with their new lives.

Show origins

This captivating musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It earned 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. Among its four Tony Awards, it won Best Costumes and Best Choreography. Ensuring you will love the visual portions of the show as much as the beautiful music and lyrics. It features exquisite tap-dancing numbers, too.

This Broadway Show follows the captivating story told in the 1959 movie by the same name. The film starred the stunning Marilyn Monroe, making it highly popular at the time. The new musical retells this cherished story from the film with a twist while maintaining the vintage comedy and musical styles from the film.

Production History

Some Like It Hot had its opening night at the Shubert Theater on Broadway in late 2022. Its show-ending performance was near the end of 2023. The shows North American tour started in 2024 and continues today. You now can experience the show in your classic theater in Pittsburgh.
