Debuting off Broadway in 2015, Hamilton was not the instant Broadway smash that it is today. Lin-Manuel Miranda has spoken candidly about its inspiration, starting as a concept album in 2009, with Miranda sharing that he was “thrilled that the White House called me tonight, because I’m actually working on a hip-hop album. It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop: treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton.” That one single performance earned praise and a well-earned standing ovation from the audience at the time, as well as former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and ultimately led to Miranda’s creation of the Hamilton musical we know now.

Because of his history in musical theater, Lin-Manuel Miranda has also gained inspiration from other award-winning theater pieces such as Les Misérables, which holds to a common theme that tells the story of a struggle, and overcoming that struggle, instead of the traditional musical theatre biases that follow the trend of being very positive and happy. Hamilton is no different, being about the struggle of an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who rose to power and became the first American Treasury Secretary. With the utmost respect to its source material, Hamilton shows us both sides of Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power, by not only offering us a glimpse into his personal life and struggle, but also his impact and lasting legacy in being able to significantly shape the Country during his lifetime.

With its story, Hamilton continues to prove its importance in our modern culture and even on the international stage, confronting themes and topics that are deeply relevant not only to the Country, but also to the world. Even the use of musical genres like hip hop, jazz, and R&B as the main score has cemented its place in modern culture, making it one of the most relevant hit Pittsburgh musicals today.
