Synopsis

The show has its origination in the early 1930s just before the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness a mobster commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they’re playing. Rather than have the mobster to put out a hit on them, the musicians decide to go on the run.

They put on disguises and, though they are cross-dressing, are able to join a touring all-female swing big band. While touring, the two fall for the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They keep their real identities concealed, but they both hope to fall in love with Sugar Kane.

Whilst touring, relationships form that could serve to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The gangsters and the FBI become involved, spotting Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines, further complicating the groups traveling to performances and its ability to make agreements with new investors.

Jerry, who now must pass off as Daphne, falls in love with one of the investors, leading to a planned wedding. Eventually, true identities becomes known, but that doesn't affect their feelings for each other. As Prohibition expires, the characters are able to move on with their new lives.

Origins

This beloved musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It collected 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. Among its four Tony Awards, it won Best Costumes and Best Choreography. Production History
