& Juliet – Musical at Benedum Center Pittsburgh

& Juliet, one of the newest and leading shows is coming to Benedum Center, Pittsburgh this nearing October on Thursday 31st October 2024. Taking inspiration from very powerful source material, Benedum Center takes on the pressure of holding the production of the classic tale of Romeo & Juliet. Shakespeare’s original play has long been known as one of the most tragic plays in several decades, with the main protagonists' intense infatuation for each other leading to their death by their own hands. Utilizing Shakespeare and his wife as characters in the play itself though, Broadway's modern play, & Juliet, tweaks the previous story by allowing Juliet to live through the ending of Romeo's suicide and focusing on her own coming-of-age story. Wishing to find new experiences with her equally-resolved friends, the characters are introduced to an unknown landscape beyond what the group of friends were ready for when they arrive in France.

Given that 400 years have passed since Romeo and Juliet, '& Juliet' also applies modernized execution that appeals to a younger audience. To drive its point to the audience, ‘& Juliet’ promotes a slew of songs taken from current music’s best producer, Max Martin. The Swedish songwriter and producer already had an idea of immortalizing his songs through theater as well, which prompted the jukebox musical, & Juliet, being created and later on premiering in the year of 2019. Martin was very liberal in the manipulation of his songs to the production, expressing how he “wished for '& Juliet' to have its own unique identity, and to let theatergoers experience that even if his songs are performed differently, you would completely follow everything.” '& Juliet' now has the songs from world-class singers such as Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, and NSYNC, among others. Due to its song choices, it set the stage for welcoming a new and young generation to West End.
